Store FAQs
This FAQ page is devoted to Store, Mailbox, and performance topics (primarily moved from Ask a Question page).
Q: In the past there have been articles recommending to create multiple (sub)folders under a mailbox to manage emails, but I am wondering if this applies to Exchange 2007 environment as well. Can I put thousands of emails in Inbox without getting performance degradation or is it still true that I should try to manage my emails in multiple folders?
A: The same rules apply to Exchange 2007 and they did to previous versions of Exchange. In order to reduce the likelihood of poor performance it is recommended to keep less than 5000 objects in any one folder. To mitigate this "limitation" sub-folders can be created to reduce the number of items in each folder.
Q: Is it possible to set permissions on mailbox folders (not public folders, Contacts for instance) by using powershell? I need to bulk set reviewer rights on Contacts folders without giving reviewer permissions on the whole mailbox.
A: Exchange 2007 doesn't provide cmdlets to do IW mailbox permissioning (ie - setting permission on folders within a mailbox).
Q: How do I make my Exchange 2003 Public Folders accessable from Exchange 2007
More Detail: When I Turn off my Exchange 2003 server, I can`t get to my Public folders. I can see the tree, but the content is gone. I have this structure that I got with the "get-publicfolder -getchildren" command line: Name Parent Path ---- ----------- Archive Westad \ ( this is an email archive with subfolders ) Internet Newsgroups \ Project archive \ ( this is an email archive with subfolders ) Westad kontakter \ ( this is our shared contacts ) I have done the changes on this page [http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/01/11/432158.aspx] but I don`t know or get the way from here and out. Is there anyone who can help me create whatever scripts necessary or tell me what else I`m doing wrong?
A: You need to move your public folder replicas to an Exchange Server 2007 computer. Details of this process can be found [http://blogs.technet.com/evand/archive/2007/02/19/filterable-properties-in-exchange-2007-rtm.aspx here]. For just the Public folder section the easiest way is to use ESM and move all replicas to the Exchange 2007 server. You can also add the replicas by using get-publicfolder '\' -recurse | set-publicfolder -replicas "Exc007\Public Folder Database,"Exc003\Public Folder Database". And after replication completes remove the replicas on Exc003. It is recommended that logging be set to a higher level to allow the administrator to better track replication status.
Q: I have the following error on 8 of my mailboxes : Event ID 9554: Unable to update Mailbox SD in the DS. Mailbox Guid: f83fade5-8dc0-4f58-96bb-f5fd00b6e7c4. Error Code 0X80070005 This error is very similar to the error reported with event 9554 for exchange 2003. I modified the permissions for these mailboxes AND ALL OTHER MAILBOXES... so this is more related to a specific problem on these mailboxes. Simply removing the added permission does not resolve the problem. I haven't found yet how to reinitialize mailbox permissions or permission inheritance... has anyone an idea?
A: The only way to reset Mailbox permissions...is to reset the whole AD Object permissions, via ADSiedit.msc. That's the same problem as for exchange 2003, but with another error code.
Q: Does anyone have any figures on the single instanceing ratio I can expect in an Exchange 2007 environment with 28 mailbox databases of 250GB each. Business units will be contained within mailbox databases.
A: This depends on the usage pattern. It will be different for every single organization. Placing business units in the same databases will help drive the SIS high. This question begs more investigation though. Please follow up...What is the purpose for asking the question? Is the customer constrained on disk space? It seems like some storage capacity planning is required here as it is the number of spindles that is the most important thing when sizing Exchange storage. Exchange 2007 only does single instancing of attachments. Check out the posting from the Exchange team: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/02/08/448095.aspx on this topic.
Q: The "HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold" registry key, does this apply to 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 running Exchange 2007 or only for Exchange 2003 on 32-bit platform?
A: The HeapDecommitFreeBlockThreshold is only used for Exchange 2000 Serverand Exchange Server 2003 running on Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003. This is not used with Exchange Server 2007 on x64 versions of Windows.
